Vulcanodinium rugosum, a recently described species, produces pinnatoxins. The IFR-VRU-01 strain, isolated from a French Mediterranean lagoon in 2010 and identified as the causative dinoflagellate contaminating mussels in the Ingril Lagoon (French Mediterranean) with pinnatoxin-G, was grown in an enriched natural seawater medium. We tested the effect of temperature and salinity on growth, pinnatoxin-G production and chlorophyll a levels of this dinoflagellate. These factors were tested in combinations of five temperatures (15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 °C) and five salinities (20, 25, 30, 35 and 40) at an irradiance of 100 µmol photon m−2 s−1. V. rugosum can grow at temperatures and salinities ranging from 20 °C to 30 °C and 20 to 40, respectively. The optimal... |

Effects of the foliar application of methanol on the yield and growth of rice (Oryza sativa cv. Shiroudi). Cien. Inv. Agr. 43(1):17-24. Approximately two decades have passed since it was reported that the foliar application of methanol increased plant biomass and yield. Many subsequent reports have been published concerning the ability or inability to reproduce these initial observations. To evaluate the effect of methanol on rice (Oryza sativa cv. Shiroudi) yield and rice components, a field experiment was conducted at the Tonekabon Rice Research Station in Iran in 2012 and 2013. The experiment had a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replicates. The plants were treated with aqueous methanol solutions (0, 6, 12, 18, and 24% (v/v)).... |

ABSTRACT Hormetic effects of herbicides at ultra-low doses have been proved against range of crop species, although available data of herbicides hormesis about the weeds growth is very limited. This study investigates the promotive effect of low doses of fenoxaprop-Pethyl on growth and seed production of littleseed canarygrass and wild oat. Pot experiments were conducted twice in Wire House at Agronomic Research Area, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, during 2014-15. Seven different concentrations of fenoxaprop-P-ethyl [0, 1, 3, 6, 9, 12 and 15 g a.i. ha-1] were applied as post emergence herbicide at 3-4 leaves stage of the weeds. Results revealed that increase in growth occurred within first two weeks after spraying at fenoxaprop-P-ethyl doses 1, 3... |

Global warming during the Paleocene Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) similar to 55 million years ago (Ma) coincided with a massive release of carbon to the ocean atmosphere system, as indicated by carbon isotopic data. Previous studies have argued for a role of changing ocean circulation, possibly as a trigger or response to climatic changes. We use neodymium (Nd) isotopic data to reconstruct short high-resolution records of deep -water circulation across the PETM. These records are derived by reductively leaching sediments from seven globally distributed sites to reconstruct past deep-ocean circulation across the PETM. The Nd data for the leachates are interpreted to be consistent with previous studies that have used fish teeth Nd isotopes and benthic... |

The study was carried out at two different altitudes in the southern region of Saudi Arabia: Abha, 2,800 meters above sea level, the high altitude (HA) area and Jazan, 40 meters above sea level the low altitude (LA) area. Following exposure to high altitude, testes of rats revealed various types of atrophy and degeneration in the seminiferous tubules and in the interstitial tissue. There was detachment of the basal laminae of the tubules and a profound decrease in cellularity. When rats were brought back to their habitat (LA) and later examined, many tubules showed normal population of cells including spermatids and spermatozoa. Well-arranged epithelium was seen in most of the seminiferous tubules of these animals, normal interstitial space and no... |

Platinum Group Metals (PGM) are modern, technologically relevant elements for which (i) the anthropogenic cycle has outcompeted the natural cycles and (ii) environmental behavior, fate and impact are still widely unknown. Stripping voltammetry was used for accurate determinations of platinum (Pt) in historical records of river sediments and estuarine oysters from the Gironde fluvial-estuarine continuum (SW France) comprising the Lot River. Sediment cores from the Lot River, dated from 1952 to 2001, showed past Pt contamination due to former industrial (smelter) activities in the Lot River watershed. These samples revealed the phasing-out of a historical Pt contamination with Pt/Th (Thorium) values of 11 × 10− 5 ± 0.79 × 10− 5 for the deepest part of the... |

Climate change and its interactions with complex socioeconomic dynamics dictate the need for decision makers to move from incremental adaptation toward transformation as societies try to cope with unprecedented and uncertain change. Developing pathways toward transformation is especially difficult in regions with multiple contested resource uses and rights, with diverse decision makers and rules, and where high uncertainty is generated by differences in stakeholders’ values, understanding of climate change, and ways of adapting. Such a region is the Murray-Darling Basin, Australia, from which we provide insights for developing a process to address these constraints. We present criteria for sequencing actions along adaptation pathways: feasibility... |

The multifactorial etiology of massive Crassostrea gigas summer mortalities results from complex interactions between oysters, opportunistic pathogens and environmental factors. In a field survey conducted in 2014 in the Mediterranean Thau Lagoon (France), we evidenced that the development of the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium catenella, which produces paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs), was concomitant with the accumulation of PSTs in oyster flesh and the occurrence of C. gigas mortalities. In order to investigate the possible role of toxic algae in this complex disease, we experimentally infected C. gigas oyster juveniles with Vibrio tasmaniensis strain LGP32, a strain associated with oyster summer mortalities, after oysters were exposed to Alexandrium... |

Abstract The routine detection of large and medium copy number variants (CNVs) is well established. Hemizygotic deletions or duplications in the large Duchenne muscular dystrophy DMD gene responsible for Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophies are routinely identified using multiple ligation probe amplification and array-based comparative genomic hybridization. These methods only map deleted or duplicated exons, without providing the exact location of breakpoints. Commonly used methods for the detection of CNV breakpoints include long-range PCR and primer walking, their success being limited by the deletion size, GC content and presence of DNA repeats. Here, we present a strategy for detecting the breakpoints of medium and large CNVs regardless of their... |

This work aimed to study the influence of gamma radiation on the growth and production of some active substances of Arthrospira platensis. Biomass production was significantly inhibited (p ≤ 0.05) by 21 and 34%, with respect to the control at 2.0 and 2.5 kGy, respectively. Chlorophyll-a content showed 11% reduction at 2.5 kGy compared to the control. As a result of growth and Chl-a inhibition, chlorophyll productivity recorded a continuous significant decrease below the control in the cells exposed to 1, 1.5, 2 and 2.5 kGy by 8, 12, 15 and 25%, respectively after 15 days of incubation. In addition, phycobillins productivity showed significant decrease by 10 and 36% below the control at 2 and 2.5 kGy of gamma radiation, respectively. Protein production... |
